Description

Il-GOSTRA or the greasy pole, a traditional popular game held by the seaside during the feasts was introduced in 1721 by the Grand Master Marcantonio Zondadari.

The pole which is around 10 metres long, is smeared with fat or some other slippery element. Flags are hoisted at the end of the greasy pole to be snatched by the winners.

The participants are aware that this game is no easy task and the risk of loosing their balance and fall into the sea is at large.

The Gostra is fun and mainly attracts the young ones. ST. JULIANS - MALTA
