Cancando, a magnetic iron mountain ten thousand feet high, appearsto be one mass of iron so rich as to contain about eighty per cent, of pure iron.The ore, however, is so rich that a flux is required to smelt it. These mines werenot exploited until after the war of independence, although as early as 1824 many mining claims in that district weretaken up and denounced, amongthem San Antonio, El Carmen,San Cosme and Las Animas. Encarnacion has an up-to-date works, producing a millionand a half kilos of bar iron peryear and possesses all the modernequipments. One of the bestknown gold mines of the earlydays of New Spain was San Josedel Oro, ten thousand feet abovethe sea. It is difficult of accessand is not worked to any greatextent at the present day.
