Summary
editDescriptionGrace Episcopal Church, City Island, Bronx - 20220616.jpg |
English: Grace Episcopal Church, 116 City Island Avenue at Pilot Street, Bronx, New York, June 2022. One of only three properties on City Island to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this modest-scaled wood-framed church is significant as an example of Carpenter Gothic architecture, a uniquely American substyle that emerged on the scene in the mid-19th century with the advent of technological advances such as scroll saws and balloon framing. Grace Church displays a textbook example of the simplified and vernacularized yet eclectic and picturesque takes on typical Gothic tropes, and as with most buildings of the style, was constructed by anonymous builders untrained as architects - more specifically, through the volunteer labor of shipbuilders from the Robert Jacob yard just next door. Grace Episcopal Church was founded in 1849 as a mission congregation of Christ Church in nearby Pelham Manor; construction on this, their first and only purpose-built home, began in 1862 and concluded the following year. |
