English: Grade II listed Phoenix Theatre, Ton Pentre
Located on the corner of Church Road and Pryce Street. Built as Maindy and Eastern Workmen's Institute which opened in September 1895. After the Second World War, the closure of local mines and the resultant dwindling of revenue from miners' contributions led to a decline. Renamed the Ton Pentre Workmen's Hall and Institute it continued to show films, until in 1971 it became a bingo hall. The bingo hall closed in 1989, leaving the hall derelict until it reopened in 1991 as The Phoenix. Grade II listed in December 1996. |
