Description

Graded bedding from the Precambrian of Tennessee, USA. (public display, Geology Department, Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio, USA)

Graded bedding is a type of sedimentary structure that consists of a change in grain size within a bed. Normal graded bedding is the more common of the two varieties - it has larger grains at the bottom and smaller grains at the top. This usually forms after a local flood or storm. The pebble horizon near the bottom of the photo marks the base of a bed - it grades upward from conglomeratic sandstone to pebbly sandstone to sandstone

Stratigraphy: Wilhite Formation, upper Walden Creek Group, Ocoee Supergroup, upper Neoproterozoic (studies that concluded an Ordovician to Silurian age for the Walden Creek Group are apparently erroneous - see Kelly, 2014)

Locality: unrecorded/undisclosed site at or near the town of Kinzel Springs, Blount County, far-eastern Tennessee, USA
