| Description |
English: Grand Union Canal (Wendover Arm) in Drayton Beauchamp Active restoration works are in progress here to restore the canal for navigable use. Its previous main function was to be the feeder that supplied water to the summit of the main Grand Union Canal as it passed through the Chilterns near Tring at an altitude of 390 feet above sea lavel. Every time a lock is used about 50,000 gallons of water are "lost", so a plentiful supply of water is required. The arm was completed in 1797, but excessive leakage was the main reason why it was mainly closed in 1904, and the water piped to the summit instead.
