editDescriptionGrand Union Canal and Pix Farm in Bourne End - geograph.org.uk - 615154.jpg |
English: Grand Union Canal and Pix Farm in Bourne End. Taken from near the moored boat in 615118, and looking across to Pix Farm.
Just visible beyond the farm are the overhead power gantries of the West Coast Main Line railway. It was in the vicinity of this part of the railway that the Bourne End railway accident occurred. On Sunday 30 September 1945 an up London Midland & Scottish Railway sleeper train from Perth was derailed when travelling at excessive speed over a crossover from the fast to the slow lines caused by engineering maintenance work ahead. The engine went down an embankment and turned over taking with it six of the leading seven coaches. 43 people including the engine driver and the fireman died and 124 needed hospital treatment. It was the worst railway accident in terms of loss of human life for thirty years. The cause of the accident was never established, although the engine driver was facing exceptionally brilliant low sunshine that may have caused him to miss the warning signals. |
