| Description | Grand Village of the Illinois in Utica Township, a national landmark (). It was home to a large settlement of the Illini confederacy. The village was formed due to pressure from rival tribes. In 1673, Louis Joliet and Jacques Marquette visited the village. Marquette returned to establish the first Christian mission in Illinois. In the 1680s, it was a friendly village to the settlements of René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle. La Salle reported that the village housed as many as 6,000 people. Sometime after La Salle left and the next European contact, the village was eradicated under mysterious circumstances. An Illini member probably killed Chief Pontiac, and the Illini were driven out in return. |
