La sécheresse est depuis toujours l'un des principaux problèmes de cette région de l'Inde dont le désert de Thar occupe une surface très importante. De nombreux puits et réservoirs ont été installés dans les campagnes et dans les villes dès l'époque rajpute. Chaque ville du Rajasthan possède des réservoirs à ciel ouvert qui sont encore partiellement utilisés par la population malgré les problèmes de pollution et les risques qu'ils font courir en matière de santé publique.
