Description

The Grande Ronde River, a tributary of the Snake River, flows generally northeast between the Blue and Wallowa mountains.

The approximately 180-mile-long river is in both the northeast section of Oregon and the southeast corner of Washington; but it is the Oregon stretch, from its confluence with the Wallowa River to the border that was designated for protection by Congress in 1988.

That Wild and Scenic portion of the Grande Ronde is about 44 miles long, and managed by both the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service.

The calm river flows past pine forests and desert canyons, offering almost year-round boating availability for those with intermediate and beginner experience. Only when the river freezes with ice chunks does recreation use slow, according to BLM employees.

The Grande Ronde is a national destination for sport fishing, with both wild and hatchery stock fisheries: spring and fall chinook; summer steelhead; and rainbow trout.
