| Description | Grant Park in Chicago (1844). Developers of Michigan Avenue lots in the 19th century were promised that the east side of Michigan would remain undeveloped. it was officially pronounced a park in 1844. The park was gradually extended with landfill. In 1901, it was named Grant Park after Ulysses S. Grant. Legal restrictions prohibiting buildings were laxed in the late 19th century, and some buildings began to appear. Aaron Montgomery Ward fought bitterly to remove these buildings and eventually succeeding, allowing only the Art Institute of Chicago to remain. Further landfill eventually allowed for the construction of three other museums by the park. |
