DescriptionGrapefruit (8449071333).jpg | First up that day: grapefruit marmalade, using these grapefruit that my parents' neighbors dropped by. In Phoenix, citrus trees are used as landscape trees, and at this time each year, the city is full of extra fruit. So much so that people often bag up extra fruit to give to neighbors or leave for sale on front lawns with an honor box...or for free. My mom goes to several events every week at some local senior and community centers, and she said right now there are bags of citrus that people just leave there for others to take home. There's even a gleaning movement in part of Phoenix, partially to help give the fruit to needy people, but also because the fruit attracted vermin (roof rats). The fruit is collected, and given fresh or as juice to food banks, prisons and Native American orgs. bit.ly/10DW2PM Sadly, I see a lot of it just rot and fall, but then again, many of these trees are more ornamental and so the fruit is not of good quality anyway. These grapefruit, though, were quite delicious. |
