"I'm glad it was me instead of you."

Anton Cermak was Mayor of Chicago from 1931 through 1933. In February of 1933, he was shaking hands with President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt in Miami, Florida when Guiseppe Zangara fired two shots, intending to kill FDR. Cermak was hit along with four other people. He and another woman died of their injuries. His tombstone is inscribed with his supposed last words to FDR which were "I'm glad it was me instead of you."

There is much speculation about this. Some say that Al Capone's mob had ordered this as a deliberate hit on Cermak as revenge for his anti-mob efforts. Others say it was in retaliation for a failed assassination attempt Cermak had ordered on Capone mob face-man Frank Nitti. Another story holds that the legend of Cermak's last words ("I'm glad...") are not true and were made up by two Chicago aldermen, Charlie Weber and "Paddy" Bauler.
