Horst Holste war seit 1938 Journalist. Im Jahr 1943 wurde er wegen Kritik an der NS-Führung zu zwei Jahren Gefängnis verurteilt und kam in ein Feld-Strafbataillon. Wegen Zweifel am Endsieg verurteilte ihn ein Kriegsgericht am 24. Oktober 1944 zum Tode. Am 20. November 1944 wurde er in Vollstreckung des Urteils erschossen. Der Bruder hat die sterblichen Überreste im Jahr 1962 auf den Nordfriedhof überführen lassen. Nach Auflassung des Grabes ist der Grabstein an diese Stelle versetzt worden.
