Summary edit

Description
English: The tombstone of locally prominent architect Władysław Zawadzki at St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Cheektowaga, New York, as seen in October 2022. Born in Poznań, then part of the Prussian kingdom, Zawadzki came with his family to Buffalo at the age of twelve and began his career as an iron- and steelworker. He was led to the field of architecture by way of his work in the factory projection office at Lackawanna Steel: he began rather modestly by designing a number of private homes in and around Buffalo's Polish-American neighborhood (at least two of which survive today), but his career would receive a shot in the arm in 1905 courtesy of the rave reception received by his design for the Dom Polski building on Broadway (now home to the Lt. Col. Matt Urban Human Services Center). He would continue practicing prolifically for the remainder of his life, which ended in January 1926 when he collapsed onstage while addressing the meeting of a local Polish nationalist organization.
