Great War Roll of Honour: Treasurer and Chief Secretary |
|||
Description |
From 1915 on, as the horrors of Gallipoli emerged and the war continued, schools, churches, municipalities, government departments and associations in South Australia erected honour rolls listing their members who had volunteered for service with the AIF, including those who had 'paid the supreme sacrifice'. Their unveilings were significant opportunities for remembrance and quiet expressions of patriotic fervour. This honour roll listed 222 employees in hospitals, offices and institutions under the direction of the Treasurer and Chief Secretary, including doctors and nurses. Ten had paid the supreme sacrifice. The board was located in the main corridor of the old Government Buildings, and was unveiled by the Premier (the Hon A H Peake) on 4 June 1918. It was the second of several rolls of honour of public servants, the first being that of the Minister of Education (GN01999). (Journal, 1 June 1918, p2, 5 June 1918, p1.) GN01995 is the same photograph. |
