DescriptionGreat men's houses (4960807487).jpg |
On the left, Sir Joshua Reynolds (Wick House). On the right, Pete Townshend (The Wick). Wick House was built for Reynolds by William Chambers (of Somerset House fame) in 1772. In the 1940s, it became the lodgings for nurses working in the Star and Garter home up the hill, part of the working fabric of one of England's greatest war memorials. Despite the charitable donations that the public have heaped on the institution over the years, the charity flogged off Wick House in January 2008, at the height of the credit bubble, so it can be turned into a private home for whoever will have the cash for such a place when the dust clears. The Wick was built in 1775 by Robert Mylne, a competitor of Chambers', who also built the old Blackfriars Bridge. Sir John Mills lived there, before selling it to Ronnie Wood, who sold the place to Townshend in the late 70s. |
