English: Greater Emmanuel Temple Church of God in Christ, 3189 Main Street (as seen from Northrup Place), Buffalo, New York, July 2020. This buff brick church building is relatively modest in size and architectural detail, yet the eyes are nonetheless drawn to the stained glass windows on the Northrup Place façade, which boast intersecting tracery and unusual diamond-shaped decorative keystones crowning the Gothic arches atop. The church was built in 1912 to house the White Memorial United Brethren Church, a congregation about which little information is available, but which some sources indicate to be a mission of the First United Brethren Church on Masten Avenue that ministered to the people of the University Heights neighborhood, which was then at the beginning of its urbanization process. The congregation had taken on the name White Memorial United Methodist Church at the time of its dissolution in the late 1980s. The building was home to St. James Missionary Baptist Church as of 2004, and its current occupant has been in the building since 2017. |
