Summary
editDescriptionGreater Sage Grouse Brood Seedskadee NWR (20873177272).jpg | Greater sage-grouse can satisfy their need for water during much of the year from the foods they eat. Their digestive system extracts the moisture from sage brush leaves and other vegetation they eat. During the summer, when temperatures may reach above 80 F, the greater sage-grouse cool themselves by panting, like a dog. The bird is cooled by increased evaporation from the lungs. This increases their need for water, and we often see greater sage-grouse drinking water from these shallow wetlands and irrigation ditches. The wetlands also provide succulent green vegetation and an abundance of insects during June, July, August, and early September. Photo: Tom Koerner/USFWS |
