Summary edit

Description

Lacustrine sedimentary rocks in the Eocene of Wyoming, USA.

This is a view of North Barrel Springs Draw (looking ~west-southwest from near Delaney Rim Road), which was formed by fluvial erosion by an east-flowing creek. The creek in North Barrel Springs Draw eventually drains into Red Wash, which flows into Muddy Creek, which is a tributary of the Snake River in far-southern Wyoming.

The small, blackish-colored rocks seen in the lower left corner of the photo are float samples of Wyoming's famous "Turritella Agate" in the Green River Formation. It consists of richly fossiliferous dark chert with abundant Elimia tenera gastropods (misnamed "Turritella" by rockhounds). This is fossiliferous limestone that has been chertified. This fossil snail horizon was deposited in an ancient lake environment, as was the rest of the Green River Formation.

Locality: west of Delaney Rim Road, northern side of North Barrel Springs Draw, ~21 km south-southwest of Wamsutter, Wyoming, USA (vicinity of 41° 29' 19.60" North latitude, 108° 04' 06.05" West longitude)
