Summary edit
The text on this stone, which is only about 1 metre high, is "GRENZ-BESETZUNG [Swiss flag] 1939-1945". Grenz-besetzung = frontier defence. This is puzzling for two reasons:
- it is in Switzerland which has been neutral for hundreds of years
- it is located at 46.67° N 7.88° E which is more or less at the dead-centre of Switzerland, as far from its frontiers as it is possible to get.
The explanation is that it stands beside the airstrip in Matten bei Interlaken which was an airbase during World War II. The location in the centre of the country having, no doubt, been selected intentionally.
There is another WW II memorial in Switzerland: a statue called "Ready for Defense" in Schwyz (slightly larger image at the foot of this page).
