English: Greta bridges – Bridge 9 Between the former Keswick and Threlkeld stations, the disused Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith Railway crossed the River Greta no fewer than 8 times in a distance of only 4 miles. All these bridges are of the bow-string girder construction, of various sizes and alignments. In addition, the same stretch saw it crossing the Greta's main feeder, the River Glenderamackin, although the bridge here is of a simpler design. This stretch of railway, which opened in 1865 and closed in 1972, has now been converted into a footpath/cycleway, so all the bridges are easily accessible. Also included in the series are the two viaducts by which the A66 crosses the Greta, and the interesting Threlkeld Bridge on the old A594. Bridge 9 shouldn’t strictly be in this series, since is over the River Greta’s main feeder, the River Glenderamackin, but as it the final river crossing on the Keswick – Threlkeld railway footpath (no longer a cycleway for this last stretch) it is fitting that it is included.
