Description Osier workers house.on a knoll - Willow workers house on a hillock. During a cycling or walking tour in the Biesbosch (The Dutch Tidal area. red) you may have seen them: small houses on a hill. They are in the middle of nowhere and you don't have a supermarket or gas station nearby. Why are these houses here? These small houses are called Osier or Willow workers houses and bring a piece of history with them. The houses were in fact used in the period when Osier or Willow workers stayed here for their work. But what are Osier or Willow workers? Osier or Willow workers are often found near large rivers and consist of swampy forest, often with willow trees. The branches and twigs of willow trees used to be widely used for making chairs, barrels and even roofs. Griend cultivation started around 1800 and more and more Osier or Willow workers workers arrived in Dordrecht. Heavy work It was hard work to move all those branches and twigs. Osier or Willow workers often had to walk, bend and lift a lot. Because the Osier or Willow workers in the Biesbosch were not close to civilization, the Osier or Willow workers workers slept close to their work. At first this happened in self-made, poorly insulated huts. Later, Osier or Willow workers houses were built. Often the houses are on a hill. Why? Because the water was often high and that's how they kept their feet dry. Owned by Staatsbosbeheer (state forestry) Curious about these houses? Staatsbosbeheer owns most of the buildings in the Biesbosch. Excursions are occasionally organized that take you along an Osier or Willow workers house. For example, on the Hoge Biezenplaat excursion from IVN or walk the Griendmuseumpad from the Biesbosch Center between April and October.
