| Description | Gross Pointe Light in Evanston, a national landmark (1873). After the 1860 sinking of the paddle steamer Lady Elgin, which claimed over 300 lives, Evanston petitioned the government for a lighthouse. Following a delay due to the Civil War, construction began in 1872. It was designed by Orlando Metcalfe Poe, who designed several other similar lighthouses on the Great Lakes. It was decomissioned in 1941, though it has operated unofficially since 1945. |
