Summary
editDescriptionGroup of the Inscribed Amphorai - Herakles and Geryoneus - Firenze MAN - 05.jpg |
English: object type / vase shape: Chalkidian hydria
- The vase is exposed in the museum standing free, with the admission to be touched. Therefore it could be a replica of some kind, but it does not look so. - description A: Athena, Herakles with club fighting Geryoneus - production place: Rhegion (?) - painter / group: my attribution (if the vase is genuin): Painter / Group of the Inscribed Amphorai / Inscription Painter, early, experimental work: The following features recall the Inscription Painter: the stepped vertical zigzags on the rim, the red disks surrounded by white dots on the neck, the lotus ornament on the shoulder, the same subject as London BM B 155, the different drawing of the eyes (men: circle with 2 strokes on the edges; women: almond shape). Peculiar features are: The shape differs from the (later?) broad shape of Chalkidian hydriai; the figural decoration is restricted to the main picture on the front of the belly; Athena is drawn differently, particularly the serpents curling around all of her body are peculiar; the iris of the male eyes seems to be reserved, with a black dot as the pupille (experimental detail or consequence of restauration / repainting?) - period / date: high / ripe archaic, ca. 550BC - material: pottery (clay) - museum / inventory number: Firenze, Museo Archaeologico Nazionale - bibliography: - (neither listed in Rumpf nor in Iozzo) - Please note: Some museums permit photography of their exhibits for private, educational, scientific, non-commercial purposes only. If you intend to use the photo for commercial aims, I would recommend you to contact the museum. |
