Description
English: A U.S. Navy Grumman F4F Wildcat takes off from the aircraft carrier USS Ranger (CV-4) on a photo-recon mission over French North Africa, during operation "Torch", November 1942. Note yellow surround to fuselage star, which partially obscures the fuselage number, "28".
As this aircraft is leaving on a photo recconnaissance mission it could either be a F4F-4 escorting a photo plane or a F4F-7 reconnaissance plane. It appears to have only four gunports. The F4F-7 had its armor and armament removed. It had non-folding "wet" wings that carried an additional 555 gal (2,101 l) of fuel for a total of about 700 gal (2,650 l).
