O Grupo Romarias Antigas do Rochão, Camacha, teve a sua organização a partir de setembro de 1945, embora já tivesse feito algumas apresentações antes desta data, então já a pedido do folclorista Carlos Santos (Carlos Maria dos Santos, Funchal, 22 jul. 1893; idem, 6 out. 1955) e, desde então, tem lutado para não deixar cair no esquecimento os usos e costumes, especialmente, da sua freguesia e com reconhecimento nacional e internacional.
O Rochão é um sítio da freguesia da Camacha, tendo sido elevado à categoria de paróquia em 1961. A Freguesia da Camacha é parte integrante do concelho de Santa Cruz, situada no interior da Madeira e a uma altitude superior a 700 metros, distando 10 Km da sede do concelho. Esta freguesia é atravessada e irrigada pela Ribeira do Porto Novo que aqui nasce, pelas levadas da Azenha e do Pico do Arvoredo, e pelo abundante caudal da levada da Serra.
