Español: Patricio Ibarra Cifuentes escribió:"En un trapecio de circo Domingo Santa María y el general Baquedano se disputan la presidencia de la República. Mientras el primero llega con facilidad donde se encuentra la banda presidencial, el segundo se queda enganchado en el palo a punto de caer al vacío. Desde los palcos la clase política observa la escena. Entre otros se encuentran Abdón Cifuentes, José Francisco Vergara, Aníbal Pinto, Máximo R. Lira, Justo Arteaga Cuevas, Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna, Justo Arteaga Alemparte y José Joaquín Pérez. Este último, “don Joaco”, clama para evitar la caída de Baquedano. El Diablo, observando la escena, contesta a Pérez diciendo “Dejénlo que se mate” manifestando así tácitamente su preferencia por Santa María. Esta caricatura vio la luz pública en 25 de junio de 1881, a más de un mes de la renuncia del General a la candidatura para ocupar la primera magistratura del país. Sin embargo, al momento de la publicación de este grabado, aun no se realizaba el referéndum para designar a los electores que decidirían el nombre del nuevo Presidente de la República." |
