Description
English: 79-80 North Road

The original premises of the Guitar, Amp & Keyboard Centre which was extended about five years ago to include TQ3104 : 76 North Road, TQ3104 : 77-78 North Road and TQ3104 : 81 North Road all painted in a distinctive yellow and red. Since 1885 the shop has traded as one unit though I have a feeling it may have joined together before but it is difficult as the street was renumbered three times between 1846 and 1870. The semi-rural nature of the town is indicated by the first person listed as a cow keeper though by the 1840s the packed terraces meant there was not much room to swing a cow let alone keep one. The building then briefly becomes a pub which most likely moved to TQ3104 : 12 Gardner Street a much bigger premises, in the mid 1850s. Number 80 then becomes a butcher which it would remain for the next 50 years with the exception of a year when AR Woodcock occupied the premises. Woodcock was a pewter, gasfitter and beer engine maker. By the mid 1880s the two premises had been combined by JM Combridge who had installed a telephone by 1888 and whose personal number was just 5. After Combridge came two generations of Goddards, the elder Frederick, dealt in furniture, new and antique, whilst the younger, HF, moved into the domestic appliance market. After that there is a gap until the mid 1980s when the store was occupied by an upholsterer in conjunction with pine furniture seller, then briefly a health food shop and ladies wear store before the current incumbants arrived in the mid 1990s.
