Description
English: A monster bursting into life Gunnera tinctoria or giant rhubarb, growing in a small watercourse in the grounds of the cathedral. After dying back during the winter new leaves have started to unfurl around the central flowering core. The plant is a native of southern Chile but has become naturalized in other parts of the world and destructively invasive in some by overshadowing and crowding out indigenous plants.

Parts of it are edible and traditionally eaten by the Mapuche Indians of Patagonia. The young petioles are sold by street vendors and eaten raw, along with salt and chilli to enhance the flavour.

(Not of course a delicacy of which St David would ever have dreamt!)
