DescriptionGyaraspur ruins of Charkhambha Hindu temple, Madhya Pradesh, 1871 photo.jpg |
English: From the source,
Photograph of the ruins of the Charkhambha Temple, Gyaraspur, Bhopal State taken by Joseph David Beglar between 1871 and 1872. At Gyaraspur, in Madyha Pradesh there are Hindu, Jain and Buddhist remains. The site was important to followers of these three faiths, shown by the construction of the Hindu Maladevi temple and a Buddhist stupa here. It was described by A. Cunningham in his report of tours in Bundelkhand and Malwa in 1874-75 and 1876-77: "Close to the Hindola stands the ruins called Char-Kambha, or four pillars, which are all that now remains of a grand temple. These pillars are of the same style as those of the Hindola Toran, with lions' heads and elephants' heads at the ends of the brackets. They were most probably the supports of the Mahamandapa, or 'great hall'". |
