Description

Gymnopilus sapineus (Fr.) Murrill

Image location: Providence Block Tree Plantation, Lebanon, Linn Co., Oregon, USA

Mixed tree plantation, conifer and hardwood. Douglas fir section, 7-12 year old trees. Eight bright yellow-orange to red fruit bodies growing scattered along several small, moss covered branches of suspected Douglas fir.

Cap: 5-6 cm across, convex to umbonate; yellow at margin progressing to orange and then red at disc; minute red scales.

Flesh: Thin and yellow, thicker and more orange at disc.

Gills: pale yellow to rusty brown; adnate, close and broad; 2-3 tiers.

Stem: 5-7 cm in length, 1-1.5 cm x .5-.8 cm in diameter narrowing at base; Golden yellow background with reddish orange fibrils, darkening to brown in base; stuffed to hollow; context yellow to orange.

Veil: Cottony annular zone close to apex, coated with rusty orange spores; disappearing or washing away easily.

Odor: pleasant, fragrant

Taste: like batteries, acrid (bitter?) I don’t think I can taste bitter.

Spores: rusty orange
