De tweede grootste stad van Armenië is tevens hoofdstad van de provincie Shirak en een voornaam handels- en industriecentrum. zie ook: nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gyumri Gyumri (Armeens: Գյումրի, Russisch: Гюмри, Grieks: Αλεξανδρουπολις, Alexandroupolis; Nederlands, historisch: Alexandropel) is de hoofdstad en de grootste stad van de provincie Shirak in het noordwesten van Armenië. Het ligt 120 kilometer ten noordwesten van de hoofdstad Erevan en is met 140.318 inwoners (2001) de tweede stad van het land. In de loop van de geschiedenis is de naam van de stad meerdere keren gewijzigd. Aanvankelijk heette de stad Kumayri, Kumairi of Gyumri, vervolgens Aleksandropol (1840-1924), daarna Leninakan (1924-1990), waarna de naam Gyumri in ere werd hersteld. |
