Hầu Đồng art performance - a Representative Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

Summary edit

Description
English: On the occasion of the annual spring festival in Vietnam, at Đền Mẫu Đông Cuông in Yên Bái province, artists, along with mediums and spirit mediums from various local communities across the country, participated in Hầu Đồng performance. They offered incense to Mẫu, seeking prosperity, luck, health, peace, and well-being for the nation, abundant harvests, and robust health for all people. In a solemn atmosphere, the spirit mediums assumed the roles of various characters from the spirit pantheon, including Thánh Mẫu (Holy Mother), Chúa Bà (Lady Deity), Quan Lớn (Great General), Chầu Bà (Lady Attendant), Quan Hoàng (Royal Official), Tiên Cô (Fairy Maiden), and Thánh Cậu (Holy Uncle). They performed gestures and expressive gazes imbued with the spirit of possession, accompanied by the melodious tunes of chầu văn (ritual songs). These songs praised the lofty beauty, divine grace, and moral teachings of Mẫu, as well as celebrated the natural beauty of mountains, forests, and the homeland. The performance became even more captivating as the music harmonized with graceful and agile dance movements by the spirit mediums, dressed in the green attire representing the nurturing mountain mother. This hầu đồng ritual is a profoundly unique cultural and spiritual practice within Vietnam’s intangible heritage, particularly associated with the Thực hành Tín ngưỡng thờ Mẫu Tam phủ (Ritual Practices of Worshiping the Three Palaces of the Mother Goddess) and, specifically, the Mẫu Thượng Ngàn tradition at Đền Đông Cuông. UNESCO has recognized this ritual as a Representative Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Please come experience it, I believe the wonderful music at the ceremony will attract you. As a young person, I still find the music during the ceremony magical to the listeners' souls. Is that a syncopation phenomenon in music? Come and experience it, even if you have different beliefs, it will still be an interesting experience.
