Description

The Medtronic cardiac pacemaker containing a French-made sealed source of 150 milligrams of plutonium-238 to provide thermoelectric power for the device was the first licensed to be implanted in humans for the purpose of clinical evaluation. The license was issued in July of 1972 to the Veterans Administration Hospital, Buffalo, N.Y. for ten pacemakers. Circa 1973.
