Summary edit

Description
English: In the foreground is a cruiser, either HMAS Australia (D84) orCanberra (D33), berthed near Garden Island for the annual children's Christmas party. The crane depicted lifted a crate which was used as a special ride for the children of Royal Australian Navy officers and VIPs. Behind the vessel is possibly the light cruiser HMAS Brisbane with the smaller vessel behind that possibly the sloop HMAS Geranium.

This photo is part of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Samuel J. Hood Studio collection. Sam Hood (1872–1953) was a Sydney photographer with a passion for ships. His 60-year career spanned the age of sail and two World wars. The photos in the collection were taken mainly in Sydney and Newcastle during the first half of the 20th century.
