Summary
editDescriptionHafotty Gwastadfryn - geograph.org.uk - 464718.jpg |
English: Hafotty Gwastadfryn. Hafotty Gwastadfryn in the SE quarter of the square is the flat area at the head of the Afon Cadair (464572) valley. It is surrounded on three sides by the westerly ridge coming off Cadair Idris (Tyrrau Mawr, 464785, and Craig y Llyn, 464735). The name Hafotty Gwastadfryn relates to its use as a summer farm building (hafod) belonging to the permanent farm (hendre), Gwastadfryn (464577), at the bottom of the valley. The animals would be brought up the hill at the beginning of summer and taken down again in the autumn (transhumance). These days, the area is still used for rounding up cattle and sheep as can be seen from the maze of fences, gates and tracks. |
