Description The explosion in Halifax, which resulted in the deaths of 2,000 people. Known as 'The Halifax Explosion' the SS Mont-Blanc, a ship from France fully loaded with wartime explosives, collided with SS Imo. The French ship blew up about 20 minutes after an initial fire caused the explosives to detonate. All hell broke loose, in the north end of the city, killing thousands of people and wiping out an entire neighbourhood. Not a house on the peninsula of Halifax was untouched. Never-before-seen photographs taken by a British sailor during WW1 of the biggest ever man made EXPLOSIONS have been made public - 100 years after they were taken. Royal Navy Lt Victor Magnus was based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, when he captured the moment of the explosion following the collision of the French and Norwegian ships.
