Seit Beschluss des Senats im Jahr 1998 sind das Hafenbecken und die umgebenden Landzungen formell Bestandteil des Projektes HafenCity, bei dem die Hafenflächen südlich der Hamburger Innenstadt aus ihrer ursprünglichen Nutzung entlassen und in Einzelhandels-, Gewerbe-, Wohn- und freizeitbezogene Flächen umgewandelt werden sollen. Den städtebaulichen Wettbewerb für das Baakenhafen-Quartier hatte im August 2011 das Büro APB Architekten für sich entscheiden. // View of the construction site of the city development area Baakenhafen on the Elbe in Hamburg.
