Description Die Kugeln auf dem Gerüst des Schwanzhammers dienten sowohl der Sicherheit als auch zur Kontrolle des Schmiedearbeiters. Solange die Kugeln durch die Erschütterungen nicht vom Gerüst fielen, konnte der Schmied darauf vertrauen, dass der Hammer den Belastungen standhielt. Bei längeren Stillstand des Hammers bildete sich sofort Flugrost auf den Kugel und der Meister konnte erkennen, dass längere Arbeitspausen eingelegt wurden.(Stichwort: eine ruhige Kugel schieben)
