Description
English: Built in 1848, this Federal-style building was built by J. N. Scofield using slave labor to serve as a student tenement for students at the University of South Carolina, and was named Harper College. The building features a symmetrical eleven-bay front facade, a taller and larger central wing flanked by two smaller, lower, and narrower wings to the east and west, a stucco-clad exterior, twelve-over-twelve double-hung windows, decorative cornices, and decorative extruded cornices. The building is a contributing structure in the Old Campus District, University of South Carolina Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.
