DescriptionHatmaker-McDonnell House, Buffalo, New York - 20200920.jpg |
English: The Hatmaker-McDonnell House, 493 Woodward Avenue at Crescent Avenue, Buffalo, New York, September 2020. Located in the Frederick Law Olmsted-designed Parkside East Historic District, the Hatmaker-McDonnell House was described by the Buffalo Friends of Olmsted Parks in 1984 as "the finest example of a Queen Anne-style residence on Woodward Avenue". The detailing here is truly remarkable, with all the requisite characteristics of the style shining brightly: the turret is round and topped with a bell-shaped roof; the Classically-inspired front porch features a handsome balustrade, Doric pilasters as supports, and elaborate foliate relief carvings in the pediment; the recessed second-floor porch is similarly balustraded; the façade varies in composition from brick on the ground floor to clapboard on the second to fishscale shingles on the front gable. The house was built in 1900 for Benjamin J. Hatmaker (1869-1941), who at the time of its construction was editor of Greater Buffalo magazine, but would later embark on a second career as an investor with interests in various mining companies. Along with most of the house's earliest owners, Hatmaker didn't stay for long: he was recorded as residing in West Falls, New York in 1903. By far the longest tenured owners of 493 Woodward were the McDonnell family, whose Irish-born patriarch Thomas (1858-1935) was a soon-to-retire clerk with the city water department when he bought the place in 1917. Now, over a century later, current owner Michael McDonnell is the fourth generation of the family to reside there. |
