Summary

Description
English: Hawthorn — Crataegus monogyna. This photograph shows the newly emerging leaves and the flower buds. One common name for the hawthorn is "bread and cheese" and as a child growing up in the countryside I used to pick the young shoots to eat with bread and butter. Beware the thorns on this tree, one of the reasons it's used extensively for hedgerows. See http://www.the-tree.org.uk/BritishTrees/TreeGallery/hawthornc.htm for more information.
