English: Hazelden Farm Oast, Marden Road, Colliers Green, Kent A twin round and single square kilned oast house.
The wooden structure is called a greenstage. The greenstage was a raised storage area for fresh hops awaiting to be dried in the oast house kiln. The wooden slatted floor allowed air to flow through and prevent the hops wilting. Greenstages were often later structures added to an existing oast house, an increase in hop production meaning a need for further temporary storage areas. This greenstage is unusual in that it is has access doors directly into the kilns rather than the upper cooling area of the stowage. Also linked to the adjacent hop processing building. |
