Description

AD 66-68.

Marble.

Cerveteri, Italy.

Vatican Museums, Vatican City.

Celebrating Nero's success over the Parthians, the breastplate of this statue depicts the emperor as the Sun riding in his chariot. The same image decorated the awning of the Theatre of Pompey in Rome during Tiridates' coronation. Below, two mythological figures symbolise the Parthian submission to Rome. Teh statue origianally carried a portrait of Nero, like the one here, stressing his martial qualities.
