A hollow Faidherbia trunk in Senegal burns, set on fire by trash fires.

Summary edit

Description
English: A hollow apple-ring acacia (Faidherbia albida) trunk burns, the result of unattended trash fires outside a rural town in Senegal. The loss of trees such as this is thought to be both a cause and a result of climate change. Few trees now remain in what was previously a forested landscape, pushing this region toward desertification. This shift in tree cover has corresponded with a reduction in rainfall in the region as well as increased wind. The trees in the background, also Faidherbia albida, exhibit heavy pruning, illustrating the importance of this forage species in sylvopastoral systems.
