| Description |
English: Hedbury Quarry This is the western part of the disused Hedbury Quarry. The basal Purbeck strata lie just below the soil at the top of the quarry face. The stone worked at the site was the Portland Freestone that lies beneath the Purbeck strata. The stone was transported away from the quarry by boat, which at the time of the quarry was economically viable. Eventually transport by road took over and the quarry's location on the coast at the bottom of a steep slope meant that it was no longer economical to keep the quarry working. |
