DescriptionA pair of class 31 1s pass through Hellifield station.jpg |
Description = A pair of British Railways Brush Type 2 A1A-A1A class 31/1 diesel-electric locomotives (believed to be numbers 31297 and 31146) pass through Hellifield station on the Up Main line with the 12:02 Heysham Moss Sidings to Haverton Hill East Grid empty ammonia anhydride train (7E91). Saturday 3rd March 1984 Hellifield South Junction signal box was located between the Up and Down lines at the south end of Hellifield station, and was a Midland Railway Type 4c design which opened on 11th June 1911 fitted with a Midland Railway Tappet lever frame, replacing an 1880s-built signal box located on the down side of the line opposite the new signal box. The lever frame was eventually extended to 64 levers numbered A-C, 1-61 before being reduced to the current 58 levers. The signal box was renamed Hellifield on 27th March 1966 after concentration of the signalling to one location allowed the closure of the 40 lever Hellifield North Junction signal box. To allow the lever frame and locking to be overhauled the signal box was temporarily closed between 24th December 2006 and 4th January 2007, although the job took longer than planned as the reopening was scheduled for 1st January The train is passing Hellifield signal box 23 signal (up main home 2) which is carried on a tubular post which has a white diamond which indicates to the driver that his train is occupying a track circuit that indicates his presence to the signalman. The signal was renewed on 18th March 1992 (the work was originally scheduled for 18th December 1991) with the signal arm being lowered to 17 feet above rail level |
