English: Henry IV of France & Catherine de Medici (1819), an early painting by French artist and salonnière Marguerite-Virginie Ancelot. Français : Henri IV et Catherine de Médicis, peinture exposée au Salon de 1819 par la femme de lettres Virginie Angelot (no 11 du livret, avec la description suivante : Henri n’étant encore que roi de Navarre, et se préparant à la guerre, fil une visite à Catherine de Médicis. Cette Reine s’était entourée des plus jeunes et des plus jolies femmes de sa cour, afin de distraire Henri de ses desseins et de lui faire commettre quelqu’indiscrétion dont elle put profiter ; mais, Henri devinant son projet, dit à Sully qui l’accompagnait : "Voilà un escadron plus redoutable que ceux du Duc de Mayenne ; cependant les femmes qui ont tout pouvoir sur Henri, ne feront jamais faire de sottises au roi de Navarre". |
