Description
English: Ornate saddle in the royal armories in the Tower of London. Tag for the exhibit states: "Saddle for the Order of the Dragon. This saddle was possibly given to King Henry V of England when he was admitted into the knightly Order of the Dragon in 1416 by King Sigismund of Hungary. It is one of a series of medieval saddles all decorated on the theme of St. George and the Dragon. They are ornamented with bone inlay plates and some, including this example, have inscriptions in German or Latin. Probably Austrian or Hungarian, about 1410-1440. Tower Armoury. vI 95" Of particular interest is Sigismund’s visit to England in the same year(1416), from May onwards, when King Henry V made him Knight of the Order of the Garter on May 24 and was in his turn created Knight of the Order of the Dragon.(THE ORDER OF THE DRAGON AS REFLECTED IN HUNGARIAN AND CROATIAN HERALDRY Ivan Mirnik)
